Treating Asthma with Buteyko Breathing
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that is characterized by sudden recurring attacks of labored breathing, chest constriction, and coughing.
Cause of Asthma
According to Buteyko Breathing theory, asthma attacks can occur when you generally already overbreathe throughout the day, and then:
- A stressful incident or allergy triggers more heavy breathing than usual.
- Your body attempts to limit overbreathing by restricting your airways.
Overbreathing is generally a bad habit, and depending on your genetics, your body may have a natural defense mechanism against it: It's called asthma. With asthma, if your breathing goes over a certain volume of liters air per minute, your body attempts to limit breathing by restricting your airways. It's telling you not to breathe so much because it's not good.
However, this defense mechanism of asthma is very unformfortable and (if you are using heavy medications) can in some cases be lethal.
Revert Asthma with a Buteyko Breathing course
Buteyko is a recognised asthma treatment in several countries (UK, Australia, Russia). The benefit of using a Buteyko Breathing course to revert asthma is scientifically proven in many studies to be:
- Great reduction in asthma symptoms.
- Great reduction in required asthma medications.
Doing a Buteyko Breathing course will give pretty quick results: your medication can often come down in days or weeks. One month of intensive practice is enough to revert most cases of asthma completely, provided no other serious chronic health issues are present. Results are dependent on:
- Severity of symptoms
- Students' compliance to instructions and guidance
- Students' level of practice (basic, intermediate or advanced)
- Frequency of support sessions for additional guidance
- Other factors (for example: age, general state of health, other diseases and activities.)
Buteyko Breathing improves your breathing volume so that stress or allergies do not trigger an asthma attack any more. You might still breathe a bit heavier in those cases, but since your general breathing is much improved, it does not result in an asthma attack. You ARE able to live without asthma after doing a Buteyko Breathing course!
